The Agricultural Estate La Calonica covers about 45 hectares on the border of the provinces of Siena and Arezzo, between the Municipalities of Montepulciano and Cortona on a crest at about 350 meters above sea level, not far from Lake Trasimeno. The wines produced fall under the production regulations of important and well-established DOCG and DOC such as Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano and the most recent DOC di Cortona. The lands are located at optimal altitudes and exposure and are characterized by a largely clayey texture, with occasional sand outcrops.
The influence of Lake Trasimeno offers mild winters and summers that are not too dry, allowing the vines to have a regular vegetative cycle. The “Capezzine Vecchie” holding in the Municipality of Montepulciano houses, other than the administrative offices, also the wine ageing cellars located in the old farm buildings in traditional style with the barrel cellar and barrels in European oak and of various capacities, while the modernly structured and conceived wineries and wine-bottling cellars are located in the “The Calonica” farm in the Municipality of Cortona.
The high density, spur-trained vineyards are made up, for up to 65%, of Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) and Canaiolo Nero, while the rest of the planted area is planted with Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, other than small areas of Malvasia Bianca, Trebbiano Toscano and Grechetto Bianco, used for the production of Vin Santo DOC di Montepulciano. The ancient olive grove has 300 trees that guarantee a small production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
